Farrow Event
From SwineBooks Pro
A Farrowing is defined as the birth of a litter of one or more live, stillborn, or mummified pigs after at least 105 days of gestation. At farrowing, a sow’s status changes from Gestating to Lactating and its current parity number is incremented by one.

[O] Service Group ID: A Service Group is typically comprised of the breeding females served during one week. For example, the animals served during the fifth week of 2007 might be in the 07-05 service group. However, the allocation of animals to service groups is completely flexible. Some large herds use daily service groups, e.g. 07-255 would represent all animals served (i.e. mated for the first time) on the 255th day of 2007. At the other extreme, small herds might allocate two week’s services to each service group.
The use of Service groups is optional, and SwineBooks will work perfectly well without them. However, they are useful when printing Sow Cards, generating Action Lists, analyzing Farrowing Rates, and in other reports.
The Service Group ID will auto-fill when user enters the Sow ID. Alternatively, the user may select [–] a Service Group ID from the pick list. This will then filter the Sow ID pick list to show only the all sows in the selected Service Group.

[O] Birth Weight: Enter the weight of pigs born alive. Pigs should be weighed within 24 hours of birth. Litter weights should be recorded prior to any cross-fostering, and should include pigs that were born live, but died before weighing.

Foster Event Data
Fostering is the transfer of preweaned pigs (piglets) from one litter to another.
The FOSTER event is used to record the cross fostering of piglets among litters. Mutiple FOSTER events on with the same or different dates may be entered in a sow’s record between farrowing and weaning or between a NURSE ON event and weaning.
[O] Fosters: Enter the number of pigs added to the litter (FOSTER ON), or enter a number preceeded by minus sign (-) to indicate the number of pigs taken away from the litter (FOSTER OFF.)
As soon as the number fostered is entered, the Piglet Fosters window will pop up.
[O] Quantity: Either accept the number displayed or type over with a different positive or negative number.
[O] (Foster) Reason: Type the first few letters of a foster reason. As soon as SwineBooks identifies the unique string of characters, it will complete the entry for you. (Alternatively, you can select [–] a foster reason from the drop-down list, but we do not recommend using the mouse for data entry.)
Click on the [ Add/Edit Reason ] button if you wish to add, change the spelling of, or disable one or more foster reason.
[O] Date Fostered: The foster date defaults to the farrow date. You can change the foster date and also continue to fill out a table of foster events with different reasons and dates. When finished, just hit on a blank line in the table. The cursor will move to your next data entry field, according to your preferences settings. The Fosters data entry window will display the number of net fostered pigs entered for the lactation.

Piglet Death Event Data
The Piglet Death event is used to record the deaths of live born pigs that die prior to weaning. Complete and accurate recording of piglet death data provides useful diagnostic data that may be used to gain an understanding of the risk factors for piglet mortalities. The Preweaning Mortalities report provides tables and charts of including breakdown by parity of sow, piglet age at death, and location (i.e farrowing crate). Understanding how such factors influence piglet deaths is essential to reducing preweaning mortality losses.
While, recording of piglet death data is optional, users are encouraged to at least record the date of death of each mortality. As research has shown a poor degree of agreement between recorded reasons for preweaned pig deaths and post-mortem findings, we recommend restricting the number of possible death reasons to maximum of sixteen which can be printed on most sow cards. Use of numerical synonyms printed on the sow cards for recording piglet death reasons is also recommended for speedy keyboard data entry.
[O] Piglet Deaths: Enter the number of piglet deaths. As soon as the number fostered is entered, the Piglet Deaths window will pop up.
[O] Quantity: Either accept the number displayed or type over with a different positive number.
[O] Reason: Type the number or the first few letters of a piglet death reason. As soon as SwineBooks identifies the unique string of characters, it will complete the entry for you. (Alternatively, you can select [–] a piglet death reason from the drop-down list, but we do not recommend using the mouse for data entry.)

[ Sticky Note ] Sticky notes are free-format comments that may be used to record additional information regarding individual mating events or the overall service event.
